LA Sanitation Free Services

The LA Sanitation Department offers multiple free services to residential customers including:

  • Disposal of bulky times and/moving boxes

  • Locations to drop off and dispose of electronic and hazardous waste (SAFE centers)

  • Free mulch

Bulky Item Collection

Please recycle your bulky items through charitable organizations and thrift stores. However, if you are unable to do so, LA Sanitation (LASAN) will pick up your large/bulky household items free of charge including:

  • Furniture (mattresses, couches, carpet)
  • Toilets
  • Electrical waste

Cardboard boxes can only be picked up with a move in move out request

To remove these bulky items from your curbside, please call the LASAN Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 at least one day before your regular collection day. Bulky items are collected on the day of your regular refuse collection.

You can also place a request online. To place requests you will need to sign in with your LADWP account or your MyLA311 account. 

Move In/ Move Out

Moving Boxes

If you’ve recently moved in or out of your residence the sanitation department can help you get rid of that old appliances or those empty moving boxes free of charge.

To schedule these items for collection, please call the LASAN Customer Care Center at 1-800-773-2489 at least one day before your regular collection day. Move In/Move Out items are collected on your regular collection day. 

You can also place a request online.

Mulch Giveaway

The City of Los Angeles provides free mulch to residents at select locations across the city. Bring your own shovel, bag or pick-up; load up your own containers and take as much as you need.

LA Sanitation (LASAN) has established a number of permanent collection sites throughout the City known as S.A.F.E. Centers where you can dispose of hazardous materials.

They accept: paint and solvents; used motor oil and filters, anti-freeze, and other automotive fluids; cleaning products; pool and garden chemicals; aerosol cans; all medicine except controlled substances; auto batteries; household batteries.

E-waste: computers, monitors, printers, network, equipment, cables, telephones, televisions, microwaves, video games, cell phones, radios, stereos, VCRs, and electronic toys.

Asbestos & Wood (with Creosote): Asbestos (friable) must be abated by professionals and then wetted and double bagged in plastic. Asbestos and wood (creosote) must be less than 3 ft. in length.
